Most, if not all, so called air purifiers today are basically only filters and generally work

well ... as filters. But, not all the air in an area goes through any filtering unit and none of the bacteria, pollen or mold that are attached to surfaces, so this leaves untreated air and surfaces in an area to re-contaminate the purified air as it is released form the unit.
